Australia has some of the world’s most unique wildlife, with many species found only in Australia.  This makes wildlife conservation in Australia incredible important. Sadly, however, Australia is facing an extinction crisis, and has the worst mammal extinction record in the world, with 30 native mammal species becoming extinct since European settlement almost 130 years ago.  Even still today, there are more than 1,700 species of animals and plants listed by the Australian Government at risk of extinction.  The leading threat to native wildlife is humans, with most losses due to introduced species and destruction of habitat.  It is for this reason that animal sanctuaries are of crucial importance, to provide a safe habitat for wildlife as well as a place for wildlife conservation, education, rehabilitation and release.

Your role as a volunteer

In this program you will have an opportunity to undo some of this damage and make a real contribution to the conservation of Australia’s native wildlife by supporting a local wildlife sanctuary that provides a refuge for Australia’s threatened species.  Set amongst 150 acres of natural parkland and lagoons, attracting over 100 species of wild birds, this spacious sanctuary provides a safe habitat for native wildlife, as well as a permanent home for sick, injured, orphaned or unwanted animals that cannot be released into the wild.  The sanctuary has important conservation initiatives, including breeding programs for the Eastern Quoll and the endangered Tasmanian Devil, which faces extinction due to a deadly facial tumor disease.

Arriving in Sydney followed by a programme in Australian nationalpark is the perfect way of starting your Australia adventure. If you have more time make sure to travel the East Coast in order to experience rainforests, Frasier Island, The Great Barrier Reef and little sleepy villages where surfers are enjoing life. Combine this with metropolitan cities like Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. Also there is interesting ancient history to learn more from in Uluru, Ayers Rock and the home of crocodiles in the Northern terrotories to explore. Don’t miss out experiencing Australia!
